"Our commitment is to provide quality cuisine using fresh and nutritional seasonal produce, for every occasion and event"

Flying Trestles has been operating since 1990 and has a rich history of "on location" service to the movie and commercials industry, conferences, weddings, and corporate and sporting events, not only in New Zealand, but in nearby Oceania.

Based in Queenstown and Wanaka we have a rich history of catering in this area and in Central Otago, and due to our mobile units concept we can function effectively anywhere in New Zealand, and often do so.

We are dedicated to providing the means to the most healthy, enjoyable and varied food possible in remote locations. We have over eight fully equipped mobile kitchens each with refrigeration, ovens, water and waste tanks so we can handle any production location. We also have a number of modular field kitchens equipped with ovens, barbeques, stove tops and water boilers contained in alloy cages, designed so they can be positioned by helicopter...

The Story of Flying Trestles...

Colin Sutherland and his wife Kirstie Follis established Ripples Restaurant in Wanaka in 1982, four years later, they sold up and opted for a cooking career in the great outdoors. Back then they made the comment: “It is great – your kitchen’s parked up in a different location every day and you meet some excellent people”.

At first the business consisted only of Colin, a four meter long caravan and a Land Rover. While catering for a Toyota commercial based around New Zealand's back-country icon the late Barry Crump [Crumpie], Colin was driving around a sweeping corner near Glenorchy, Queenstown, when a trestle strapped to the Land Rover roof flew off, and landed perfectly set up in an adjacent paddock – and so the company name was born!

Photo above: sunset on Mt Grand looking towards Lake Hawea, the original home base of the Flying Trestle mobile kitchens. These are now based in Queenstown, while the office is based at Lake Wanaka. Hawea is twenty minutes drive from Wanaka, and it is a sixty minute drive from Wanaka to Queenstown [on the shores of Lake Wakatipu]. This whole area is part of what is known as New Zealand's Southern Lakes.
